Whumptober 06. Boon
Not Realizing They're Injured: unhealthy coping mechanisms | healed wrong | "it's not my blood"
Balk had not expected to reawaken when he fell--not to paradise, not to hell, not to anything. He was no true believer, even if his heresies remained limited to the confines of his heart.
Balk had quite thought himself given over to oblivion until his eyes opened once more to the dusty Mullonde stonework. Even then, he had thought it some phantasy--the last traces of memory fleeing the dead. It took Cletienne's appearance for him to acknowledge to himself that he remained, his thoughts still tethered to his body.
"They were right in saying you might be reclaimed, Fendsor." Cletienne was unemotional. "Even with the killing blow unmended."
Balk found himself able to sit, to turn, to press his hand against his chest and find the cold edges of an open wound. His throat moved as if to gasp, but he could not draw air into his lungs. He realized that there should be more than detached curiosity at these facts: that they ought carry the weight of some horror.
"Your ambitions, if I recall, didn't need much by way of warmth to carry them forward." Cletienne lips curled slightly. "You might even consider this turn something of a boon."

Shout-out to the final stretch in fft, where they hand you two battles that are pretty much duds both in terms of interesting dialogue as well as worthwhile battle design in form of loffrey and cletienne, almost tricking you into believing itā€™s safe to tune out until youā€™re facing Folmarv himself, just to suddenly throw Barich ā€œIā€™ve been dehumanized by the aristocracy for so long that the only way for me to feel human again is to break free of that subordination, even if that entails giving up my actual human body and soulā€ Fendsor and his hell of hydras at you.

KNIGHTS VERSUS JUDGES - ROUND TWO
BARICH FENDSOR VS. JUDGE MAGISTER BERGAN
(Sorry for the closeup of Bergan's face. The only other remotely suitable picture I could find of him was the one of his "point" in Drace's face.)
The only thing that these two men really have in common is that they are the "creepiest" of their respective fighting forces. No, really. That's about it.
Well, I think I'd throw them against each other in a fight because they both love to play dirty. Between Barich poisoning the battlefield and Bergan injecting nethicite into his own bones, I can imagine they'd both have a grand old time throwing out their favorite tricks.Ā Barich would, however, take the fight very personally. XII's Ultimania Omega does say that Bergan, like most of the other Judges, was born into nobility. Throughout Tactics, Barich's greatest goal seems to be to crush the aristocracy. Bergan would not be exempt from that.
The outcome of this battle is - once again - dependent on a few variables. Bergan is one of the finest examples of a berserker in all of Ivalice, and I think he'd win anything related to close combat. But if the fight were to start from long-range, then Barich and his guns would have a clear advantage.
(Though it is not applicable for this fight, I should point out that all Knights versus Judges fights are with the Knights NOT using their Zodiac Stones. There was some debate about that in the notes of Folmarv versus Ghis.)

Ramza: So you've become the pawn of the Lucavi, too. Was such your fear of death, that you would sooner bend your knee to demons? Barich: You are a naive child who speaks of things he does not understand. Only now am I made truly human! Ramza: How does selling your soul to demons make you human? Barich: I stand above all other men now. I have transcended death itself! No longer must I bow my head in coy attempts to curry favor with you highborn nobles! I've bought my freedom. I am a human at last - no longer something less!
During the previous fight with Barich, the knight did make a statement that nobles were the cause of Ivalice's suffering. As always, it resulted in a rather long-winded argument about what should be done to put things to rights.
To Barich, being "human" evidently means having power. It's an interesting way of seeing the world. He says that nobles thought of him as something less than human, but it sounds as though he truly believed them. Why else would he be so quick to proclaim himself as "human", even after having been possessed by a demon?
His train of thought does make sense, though, in a very twisted sort of way. If nobles are soulless creatures, than only by selling his soul can he become "human" like them.

Barich: Once you've put a stop to this fighting, what then? How do you propose to purge Ivalice of her corruption? Her fever will not cease to rage till her festered limbs are cut and seared! Even you must see that now! Ramza: You would cut away the pure flesh with the fould. There is corruption, yes, but there are also good men in Ivalice, and they are not few! There are ways to heal a festered wound without the knife. The poison can be drawn! Barich: Pray tell what poultice might draw the nobles from this land! So long as you blight it with your existence, we must bow to your whims. A man alone might know equality. Two men, never! One will ever seek to exploit the other. And I will not be exploited! I will claim your seat, and take what is my due. I should think I have at least that right!
Another obligatory "violence sucks" discussion.

Barich: That's the last of it. The winds bear it onward now. And fair winds they are. They should keep it airborne for a half-day if they hold-more than time enough.
Barich: Now there is a creature I had not thought to find in these wastes! Ramza: One might say the same of a Knight Templar so far from the Church. What is it you scatter to the wind? Barich: Oh, that? I suppose there's no harm in your knowing. There's naught you can do to stop it now.
Barich Fendsor is one of the more elite members of the Knights Templar. Though he's somewhat overshadowed by Folmarv, he's a notable antagonist in his own right. Despite the difficulty of this fight, I wish we could see more of him.
